"Klausjagen" in Küssnacht
On the night before Saint Nicholas, December 5, at 8.15 pm, a loud cannon shot can be heard. All the streetlights are out, and the parade begins in complete darkness and a sense of anticipation.
The head of the parade is comprised of "Geisselchlepfer", trained to use the traditional wagon-coach whips. Following them are 180 "Iffelen", all of whom carry a candlelit Gothic-shaped lantern on their heads and shoulders. As the "Iffelen" pass by, we begin to hear the 3-tone music of the musicians.

Between the lantern-bearers and the musicians appears the majestic and dignified bishop Saint Nicholas, who is accompanied by his "Schmutzlis", black-clothed chimney sweeps representing the darker side of life, and followed by approximately 700 "Klausjäger", men dressed in white traditional farmer shirts with huge cow bells swinging from their hips on heavy leather straps and belts. About 200 horn players make up the last formation of the parade.
