Lucerne now ranks among the organizers of major international sport events. On Sunday, 25 October 2009, thousands of participants are expected to run in the Lucerne Marathon.

The marathon route around the Horw peninsula is 21km; thus, marathon participants will run the course twice. In attaining their 42,195 kilometers, the runners will cross the Seebrücke and pass the KKL a total of four times, with 60% of the route involving urban districts.
Variation A: Test-run stretch for marathon novices, which runs from the Swiss Transport Museum to the village center of Horw (distance 13km).
